Athletes don't have to be on the hot seat

Slugging it out on a court that is way hotter than the actual air temperature is a set-up for heat related illness according to Dr. Brian Grawe, a UC Health sports medicine surgeon, who was the doctor for tennis players at the Western & Southern Open. Right now there are a couple of common ways for them to cool down including waiting for ball boys and girls to bring wet towels.

Nadal pulls out of W&S Open due to injury

Rafael Nadal, the 2013 Western & Southern Open champion, has withdrawn because of a wrist injury.

Western & Southern Open Officials say Rafael Nadal, the tournament defending champion, has withdrawn due to a wrist injury.

Nadal, currently ranked #2 in the world, says he is disappointed:

"Unfortunately I injured my right wrist yesterday during practice and after the tests I have undergone today in Spain, including an MRI, and checking with my doctors, I will have to stay out of competition for at least 2-3 weeks. I am sorry and wish the best to the tournament and thank all of the fans for their support."

2013 Western & Southern Open coming in August

It’s fast approaching, and now is the time to make your plans. The 2013 Western & Southern Open runs from August 10-18 at the Lindner Tennis Center in Mason. Will Sikes, spokesman for the tournament, is in The Front Row with Betsy Ross to talk about this year’s event.
