Over the Rhine

If you've been  to Over the Rhine lately, you know people are flocking  there on the weekends and increasingly during the week. New restaurants, new shops, and new apartments and condos are helping transform the urban core.

The subject came up during the 2015 Regional Economic Outlook at Eggs 'N Issues Tuesday at the METS Center. That's where members of the Northern Kentucky Chamber of Commerce and the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber heard:

Local photographer Jymi Bolden’s work is part of a current exhibit, OTR: Main Street – Under the Radar, on display at the Art Beyond Boundaries gallery on Main Street. He’s in the studio with Jane Durrell to talk about the exhibition and growth and success of the gallery.

Dan Wright, owner of OTR's Senate, offers a peek behind the scenes of his restaurant and his life with his book Senate: Street & Savory.  Favorite recipes, including his popular gourmet hot dogs, are featured along with cooking techniques and tips.

The 13th annual MidPoint Music Festival kicks off this Thursday, offering festival goers three days of music, fun, food and drink, in various venues throughout Over the Rhine and downtown. While headliners at this year’'s MidPoint are The Afghan Whigs, Chromeo and OK Go, the festival continues to embrace emerging artists, the bands people will be talking about next year.

On Saturday, July 26th, Taste of OTR returns to Cincinnati's Washington Park.

The Taste of OTR highlights the cuisine, culture and music of one of Cincinnati's most colorful neighborhoods. It celebrates the cultural renaissance going on in the area while also recognizing that there is still work to be done. Taste also benefits Tender Mercies, a local organization that works to provide housing solutions for homeless adults with mental illness.

The Over the Rhine Boxing Center is a hit. The shiny new gym, part of the OTR Recreation Center, is getting kids off the streets and teaching them leadership, sportsmanship and ethics, according to the people who run it.

Last year crews converted an old leaky pool at the recreation center into what may be the largest boxing facility in the Midwest. Buddy LaRosa had a lot to do with it. He said, "Our goal is just to provide a second family atmosphere because most of these young men are not from the traditional two-parent homes."
