Blue Wisp Big Band

The Sorg Opera House has finally begun hosting a variety of musical concerts for area music fans.  The first concert was by the Butler Philharmonic on September 24th, 2017.  The next concert will feature the sounds of the Blue Wisp Big Band, a band which has been performing on the Cincinnati jazz scene for decades.

What a great way to start a local music series: The Blue Wisp Big Band will be featured on WCET-TV's "River Valley Rhythms" premiere Friday (10:30 p.m., Channel 48).

It's the first of three one-hour music performance shows planned this year for the new CET series.

First up: The Blue Wisp Big Band led by drummer John Von Ohlen, with guest trumpeter Terell Stafford, taped at the Xavier Jazz Series.

Xavier University music professor and organizer of the XU Music Series, Dr. Polina Bespalko, previews the upcoming concerts in their new jazz series, including a performance from the Blue Wisp Big Band on September 13, with our Ron Esposito.

Bill begins this week's Swing show (which airs on Saturday night, June 6th at 10pm) with the tune, "The Song is Ended" by vocalist Dakota Staton.  I did some online research and discovered several different references to her birth year from 1930 to 1931 and 1932.  So, I'm going with 1930 as mentioned in her 2007 New York Times obituary.  Her first album which was on Capitol, "The Late, Late Show," was a hit in 1957.  The song Bill features tonight is from he

4/30 – International  Jazz Day - Jazz events all over the world. 

5/2 – 9pm - Don Braden, internationally acclaimed jazz saxophonist and Cincinnati native at The Greenwich with Phil DeGreg (piano), Art Gore (drums), and Aaron Jacobs (bass).
