Dubbed the world's largest display of LEGO art, The Art of the Brick opens Friday at the Cincinnati Museum Center. It features more than 100 pieces of art created entirely from LEGOs.
As WVXU reported in August:
Artist Nathan Sawaya's works include original designs along with adaptations of famous pieces such as the Mona Lisa by Da Vinci and Starry Night by Van Gogh. For the adventure seeker, there's a 20-foot long T-Rex skeleton.
Speaking in Cincinnati, Sawaya says he's always liked LEGOs. "I like the distinct lines that LEGO bricks create when used to form sculptures. I like looking at these little rectangles - these little right angles, squares. And when you see the sculptures up close, you're going to see those sharp corners. But then when you back away from it and you look at the artwork from a different perspective, all those corners are going to blend into curves. And that's really the magic of LEGO."
Sawaya admits he has to buy his LEGOs just like anybody else, though he does have a special arrangement to order the bricks in mass quantities.
His favorite color of brick is gray because there are several shades.
Museum Center CEO Elizabeth Pierce calls it the perfect blend of science, technology, engineering, art, and math - or STEAM. "This exhibit is the real-world application of STEAM, done in a way that so many children and adults alike are going to appreciate."
There's also a companion exhibit titled Brickopolis. It is an interactive gallery with kid-sized work tables and bins full of LEGO bricks for children and adults to make their own creations.
