Last month, President Obama's oldest daughter, Malia, announced she plans to take a year off between graduating high school and starting her studies at Harvard.

Taking what is known as a gap year is not common in the United States, but an increasing number of students are considering spending time outside of the classroom between high school and college to gain some real-world experience.
