Reducing The Stigma Of HIV/AIDS Among African Americans

In 2016, African Americans accounted for 44% of HIV diagnoses, despite making up just 12% of the U.S. population. There is still a major stigma around the HIV epidemic and this can be even more pronounced in the African American community. In an effort to raise awareness and end that stigma, February 7th, 2019 was designated National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day, a time for education, community engagement and testing.

Joining Cincinnati Edition to discuss the local campaign to increase awareness of how HIV and AIDS affect the African American community are University of Cincinnati College of Medicine Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Community Educator Jaasiel Chapman; Assistant Professor of Clinical Medicine Dr. Senu Apewokin; Principal Research Nurse for the AIDS Clinical Trials Unit Eva Whitehead; and Cincinnati City Councilwoman Tamaya Dennard.
