Preventing, Recovering And Recycling Wasted Food Is The Focus Of An Upcoming Forum

A plan will be created through the Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Waste Forum to prevent, recover and recycle food waste.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 30-40 percent of the food supply becomes waste. 

This amounts to 133 billion pounds and $161 billion worth of food (in 2010), which means food that can go to hungry families goes to landfills and negatively impacts the environment. The USDA and U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) have recently set goals of reducing food waste by 50 percent by 2030.

The City of Cincinnati is partnering with Green Umbrella, Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District, and the Brueggeman Center for Dialogue at Xavier University to host the Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Waste Forum on November 4. This strategic conversation will allow stakeholders to create a local plan to prevent, recover and recycle food waste.

Joining us to talk about the problem of food waste and the forum are Director of Hamilton County Department of Environmental Services, Holly Christmann, and Founder/CEO of sustainability company BrainBox ltd, Lauren Campbell.
