Plans progressing for sports complex at former paper plant

The developers behind a plan to turn a former paper plant in Hamilton into a multi-use sports facility say they're gaining momentum. Property Manager Frances Mennone says the list of community leaders and development partners backing the renovation plan at the former Champion Paper site is growing."We have multiple options for funding sources and that is still developing," says Mennone. "It's looking promising for a potential future development starting in 2016."

The rowing center already has a deal with a national group and will be one of five RowAmerica locations.

Mennone says there's strong interest, especially from several non-profit groups, in a municipal baseball stadium as well.

WVXU reported in January:

A pair of feasibility studies suggests the former Champion Paper site could be converted into a successful indoor and outdoor sports facility focusing on court and turf sports like soccer, lacrosse, volleyball and basketball.
Menonne says the site is more than 500,000 square feet. "If we were to redevelop all that space, and I don't think we will, that would be the second largest indoor sports complex in the U.S." She says the project would more likely be 350,000 - 400,000 square feet; and similar developments in other cities cost around $30 to $40 million.
