By a two-to-one margin, Hamilton County voters said "yes" to a new one mill property tax for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. The Cincinnati Zoo's renewal levy passed 78 to 22 percent.
"We're very appreciative of the support the community has given our library again," Executive Director Kim Fender said Tuesday night. "We're glad they agree that keeping our library strong is important and that we'll have the funding to continue for years to come."
Fender says usage is up by 60 percent. "Keeping up with that kind of demand is very challenging."
Voters approved another one mill property tax levy in 2009.
Money raised by the new levy will fund repairs to maintain the 40 library branches and be used for regular operating expenses.
The library levy will cost the owner of a $100,000 home an additional $35 per year.
The zoo levy is a renewal and will not cost homeowners any additional money.
