Some historic murals at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport will soon be relocated to the Duke Energy Convention Center.
Airport CEO Candace McGraw on Monday explained the project to a city council committee saying "There were 14 murals that were relocated to the airport from Union Terminal. Those 14 murals were relocated at various locations around the airport, nine of which are located in Terminals 1 and 2."
Those two terminals will soon be demolished to make way for a consolidated rental car facility.
The mosaics are by artistWinold Reiss. The remaining works from the original commission are scene in the Union Terminal rotunda.
The airport board will cover the approximate $1.5 million cost of removing, crating and transporting the murals to the convention center. The city will pay about $750,000 to unpack and place them.
The murals will be displayed on the west side of the building along Central Avenue under the large Cincinnati sign.
Council Member Wendell Young did question that location for the display.
"My concern is that nobody is really going to see them," Young said. "I guess if you're on the expressway you might see it kind of passing by. I'm just wondering was there any consideration given to other locations where they would be accessible to the public."
The work to remove and crate the murals is expected to begin next month. They'll be moved in late February or early March. All the work is expected to be completed by mid-March.
The large murals will be relocated over three weekends to minimize traffic impacts.
