Ham Co Sheriff's Dept. eliminates check weapons at door policy

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department is changing its weapons policy at all county buildings.

Beginning April 15th if you bring a gun, knife, mace or any contraband that could be used as a weapon inside, you will have to take it back to your car, or it will be destroyed. Under the current policy sheriffs deputies would tag it and hold it for you until you were ready to leave.

The reason for the change, according to Sheriff's Spokesman Jim Knapp, is the department was shorthanded at the metal detectors and this slowed down the lines. The new signs say:

"Effective April 15th, 2013, The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office will no longer issue claim tags or temporarily hold any type of weapon such as knives, mace or any kind of contraband or items that can be used as weapons."
