Haircuts from the Heart provides hair care for marginalized individuals in the community.

Sister Bonnie Steinlage, a Franciscan Sister of the Poor, started Haircuts from the Heart at a salon in 1988 after hearing the Ash Wednesday gospel, “When you pray, wash your face and comb your hair.” She thought everyone, including the poor and homeless, should have access to hair care. Her services were available to children, the elderly and individuals with disabilities.

Today, Ida Mueller has taken over the salon services, continuing in Sister Bonnie’s tradition of helping the poor. She, Sister Bonnie and Executive Director of Franciscan Ministries, Inc., Elaine Ward, join us to talk about Haircuts from the Heart.
