Duke Energy is moving up the timeline on plans to shut down its remaining coal-fired units at its New Richmond plant.
Duke says it will retire the last two coal-fired units at the W.C. Beckjord Station on Monday, September 1. The company announced the plan to move away from coal three years ago, but the units weren't scheduled to be fully offline until January 2015.
It will take several years to completely decommission the coal units.
Oil-fired combustion units and the substation, transmission and distribution operations at Beckjord will continue.
This is the same power station that was in the news earlier this month. As WVXU reported, 9,000 gallons of fuel spilled into the Ohio River August 18 as it was being transferred to the riverfront facility.
