Starting this week, construction begins at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) to create a new entrance road and improved access to the airport.
The work will continue through the third quarter of 2019 and will include a new entrance to the Main Terminal as well as a connection to a consolidated rental car facility that is scheduled to open in late 2021. Other changes include:
- Elimination of the loop that supported former Terminals 1 and 2
- Partial demo to the Terminal Garage to make way for the new entrance road
- Traffic flow changes on the arrival/pick-up and departure/drop-off ramps
- New entrance plaza to Terminal Garage
The partial demo to the Terminal 2 garage starts this month, with less than a quarter of the garage being taken down, according to a fact sheet provided by CVG. Roadwork will be complete by November 2019.
The anticipated budget for construction costs is $165 million. Messer Construction will build the new rental car facility, which will be in the space where Terminals 1 and 2 once stood.
"CVG is experiencing record-breaking growth and with more passengers coming through our front door this project will improve access to the airport and elevate the passenger experience," CVG's CEO Candace McGraw said in a release. "The updates and new rental car facility will also eliminate emissions from shuttles circling back and forth from rental car lots and the Terminal and continue to make CVG competitive."
CVG added 1.3 million new passengers in 2017 and saw traffic grow by 16 percent, four times the national average. Allegiant, Delta, Frontier and Southwest have all announced new service routes for 2018.
