Westwood

Westwood is the city's largest neighborhood in terms of its geographical size, and it's the most heavily populated at 30,000 residents. At one point, it was a crossroads for commerce moving in and out of the city, a place where many large and fashionable homes were built. But, with changes in the city's zoning code in the 1970's and older generations dying off and younger generations moving out, Westwood has seen blight move in.

The latest production from the creative minds at Madcap Puppets is Under the Bonsai, and it will be presented March 21 at the Clifton Cultural Arts Center and March 28 & 29 at the Cincinnati Art Museum. John Lewandowski, artistic & executive director, is with Lee Hay to talk about this production and Madcap’s new home in Westwood.

Cincinnati is likely to give $500,000 to the Madcap Puppets for its plan to remodel a Westwood building into a new performance space.

Artistic Director John Lewandowski said the project at the former Bell Telephone Exchange Building on Harrison Avenue will also benefit the community.

“How the arts can lead revitalization in a neighborhood like Westwood and how the arts are a critical part of the fabric of our community that helps keep us together and give us pride in our neighborhood and pride in what we’re doing,” Lewandowski said.

Like many Cincinnati neighborhoods, Westwood has been working on plans to revitalize its business district.

Now residents have a chance to share their ideas Saturday during a community meeting.

John Eby said it’s the culmination of five years of work.

“What we’re asking people to do is to come together as a community and really give us their feedback on their ideas on what should happen within our business district,” Eby said.

Cincinnati Council did not vote Wednesday on funding a feasibility study for the Westwood Civic Square project.

The decision was delayed after the Westwood Civic Association said the plan needs more discussion.

In a letter the group said right now it's not for or against the project.  Becky Weber with the association spoke to Council.

Update:  Westwood Civic Association has asked the city to not move forward with this project until it gets the answers needed to make an informed decision.

In an e-mail the group says, "Please understand Westwood Civic is not for or against the project, we need more information and we want to involve more of the citizens, business owners etc. from the neighborhood.  This project should not go forward until we hear from more of you and our business owners."

A Westwood Civic representative will be addressing Council prior to a vote on the funding issue.

Construction on Cincinnati's newest fire station is already underway in Westwood.  A groundbreaking ceremony was held Thursday.

Officials say it will improve public safety and residents say they hope it will spur other economic development.

The new Station 35 will sit on Harrison Avenue near the intersection of McHenry.

The 18,000 square foot facility will have 4 bays for equipment and will replace the 105-year-old location about a mile and a half away.
