City deals with first snow of season

The Cincinnati city administration is promising everything will be done to make the streets safe after Monday morning's snowfall.  Many places in the area reported receiving two to four inches of snow.

Cincinnati Mayor John Cranley says everything will be done to clear city streets as soon as possible but he is warning that Tuesday could be worse.

Colder temperatures Monday night are expected to re-freeze anything that melts during the day, creating icy streets.

Why you should care about road salt prices in the middle of summer

Temperatures are soaring, and so too are road salt prices.

It may seem odd to think about snow and ice right now but transportation departments are buying now for the winter. They're finding steep prices.

Hamilton County Engineer Ted Hubbard says the county paid $45 per ton last year. This year the county is paying $104 per ton.

Snow in large supply; salt, not so much

"Pretty lean." That's how Engineer Ted Hubbard describes Hamilton County's road salt supplies.

"The problem isn't that we don't have material on order," says Hubbard. "The problem is the suppliers are having difficulty getting it to us in the quantities that we ordered... We're getting it in but it's coming in very slowly."

Hubbard says the county has already gone through more than 22,000 tons of salt and that doesn't include the most recent storm. As of Monday afternoon the county had just below 3000 tons on hand.
