With a seemingly never-ending winter it’s hard to believe opening day is less than a week away, but the people are more than ready for our city’s unofficial holiday and the first game of the season.

In thinking about Great American Ball Park through the winter, photographer Michael E. Keating chose to make photographs in black-and-white, a classic look that conveys a mood.

The Reds are calling on two former team captains to throw out the ceremonial first pitch on opening day.  In a release, the team says David Concepción and Barry Larkin will throw out simultaneous first pitches before the Reds take on the Cardinals on March 31st  at Great American Ball Park.

Concepción was named captain in 1983 and Larkin got the title before the 1997 season.

Concepción also will serve as the grand marshal of the 95th Findlay Market Opening Day Parade, which begins at noon before the 4:10 game.

It's Opening Day in Cincinnati and it might as well be a major holiday in this baseball-crazed town.

Despite the cold, thousands of fans turned out to line the parade route, party at The Banks, and get into the ballpark early to watch batting practice.

Along Race Street Brandy Adams and her friend were seated hours before the parade began and it turns out, they sit in the same place every year to watch it.

"I don't know, it just kind of happens. We always park in the same spot, it was never done on purpose."

Somewhere in Great American Ball Park today, there will be many a little boy or little girl, dressed in red from head to toe, bundled up in Reds blanket, watching in awe at his or her first Opening Day.

Seeing their heroes play on the green grass – Joey Votto, Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce and the rest.

They will be sitting next to a mother or father, who had their own childhood heroes – the wire-to-wire, World Series champion Reds – thinking of their own childhood heroes – Barry Larkin, Eric Davis, Chris Sabo.

With Opening Day on Monday, visitors to Great American Ball Park should also plan time to check out some of the new exhibits at the Reds Hall of Fame and Museum. HOF Executive Director Rick Walls is in the studio with Mark Heyne to talk about the autograph exhibition, and the salute to Joe Morgan display that will culminate in the unveiling of the Joe Morgan statue on Crosley Terrace later this season.
