MidPoint Music Festival

The 13th annual MidPoint Music Festival kicks off this Thursday, offering festival goers three days of music, fun, food and drink, in various venues throughout Over the Rhine and downtown. While headliners at this year’'s MidPoint are The Afghan Whigs, Chromeo and OK Go, the festival continues to embrace emerging artists, the bands people will be talking about next year.

Electric Citizen

As autumn approaches, most of us are put in the mindset of witches, ghosts and creepy characters.  It is appropriate then that I present the self-titled EP by Electric Citizen.

With the first listen of Electric Citizen, I was transported back in time to an era before cell phones, before digital downloads and, yes kids, before the internet.

In preparation for this weekend's MidPoint Music Festival, I met up with John Crowell and Caitlin Behle from Each Note Secure to talk about what local bands are on their must-see lists and how to best prepare for the fest.

In a recent review, I compared Moonbow’s first album The End of Time to a roller coaster.  If that metaphor stands true, then the album new again by The Happy Maladies is the merry-go-round – and this ride is missing a gear or two; and the ride, and its operator, have a few screws loose.

Now celebrating its 12th year, the MidPoint Music Festival returns to venues around Cincinnati September 26-28. Dan McCabe, the festival’s executive producer for the last six years, joins our Jim Nolan to preview this year’s event and highlights some of the musicians who will be performing including headliner Shuggie Otis.

Local band Seabird

Local band Seabird recently performed at the Bunbury Music Festival, and will also be on the bill at this year’s MidPoint Music Festival. Brian O’Donnell welcomed Aaron and Ryan Morgan into the studio to talk about Seabird, their decision to leave the EMI label, and their recent Kickstarter campaign to fund a new CD.

Us, Today

Aug 2, 2013

Us, Today is a Cincinnati trio of guitar, vibraphone/keyboard, and drums whose music is best described as an avant-garde blend of jazz, rock, minimalism, and electronic music, with a heavy emphasis on experimentation and improvisation. They will be part of this September’s Midpoint Music Festival, but Stuart Holman had the chance to sit down with Kristen Agee and Joel Griggs from Us, Today to talk about their wide-ranging musical styles and influences.

MidPoint Music Festival kicks off Thursday night in Washington Park.
