Mardou: The Cardigan EP

Sep 24, 2013

If things were simple, my review of Cardigan by the band Mardou would consist of two words: "Holy $#^+!" Because those are the first two words I said when I heard this EP.

Within 23 seconds of the track "Margaret," I was rapt, sold, converted and owned.  The pop-punk pseudo-surf feel of this song struck a resonating chord deep in my heart.  When I started doing local music reviews, this was the album I was hoping to find.

Electric Citizen

As autumn approaches, most of us are put in the mindset of witches, ghosts and creepy characters.  It is appropriate then that I present the self-titled EP by Electric Citizen.

With the first listen of Electric Citizen, I was transported back in time to an era before cell phones, before digital downloads and, yes kids, before the internet.

In preparation for this weekend's MidPoint Music Festival, I met up with John Crowell and Caitlin Behle from Each Note Secure to talk about what local bands are on their must-see lists and how to best prepare for the fest.

umin: antiv

The album antiv is the third full-length release from experimental art-musician, umin.

Umin’s music is dominated by baritone ukulele explorations and digital sequencing of various sound forms.  The compositions are non-linear, non-objective and are tied to little, if any, musical conventions.  The tracks are at times hypnotic, meditative and frantically unsettling.

Local music icons Karin Bergquist and Linford Detwiler, better known as Over the Rhine, have a new CD coming out (“Meet Me at The Edge of the World”) and a live concert at Coney Island on September 13. They stopped by our studios for a talk with Ron Esposito about the new music and what fans will hear at the Coney Island event.

In a recent review, I compared Moonbow’s first album The End of Time to a roller coaster.  If that metaphor stands true, then the album new again by The Happy Maladies is the merry-go-round – and this ride is missing a gear or two; and the ride, and its operator, have a few screws loose.

The album Higher Action by The Guitars is a time machine upholstered in crushed red velvet and fine Corinthian leather.  Every note, every verse and every track is perfectly crafted to wrap you in luxurious comfort and style.

Now celebrating its 12th year, the MidPoint Music Festival returns to venues around Cincinnati September 26-28. Dan McCabe, the festival’s executive producer for the last six years, joins our Jim Nolan to preview this year’s event and highlights some of the musicians who will be performing including headliner Shuggie Otis.

Local band Seabird

Aug 23, 2013

Local band Seabird recently performed at the Bunbury Music Festival, and will also be on the bill at this year’s MidPoint Music Festival. Brian O’Donnell welcomed Aaron and Ryan Morgan into the studio to talk about Seabird, their decision to leave the EMI label, and their recent Kickstarter campaign to fund a new CD.
