MidPoint Music Festival gearing up for 12th year

Now celebrating its 12th year, the MidPoint Music Festival returns to venues around Cincinnati September 26-28. Dan McCabe, the festival’s executive producer for the last six years, joins our Jim Nolan to preview this year’s event and highlights some of the musicians who will be performing including headliner Shuggie Otis.

Local band Seabird

Local band Seabird recently performed at the Bunbury Music Festival, and will also be on the bill at this year’s MidPoint Music Festival. Brian O’Donnell welcomed Aaron and Ryan Morgan into the studio to talk about Seabird, their decision to leave the EMI label, and their recent Kickstarter campaign to fund a new CD.

Smoke Signals... The Collapse

I was fortunate to stumble upon the band Smoke Signals... recently at The Southgate House Revival.

The Newport-based trio played in the Lounge – the smallest of the three stages – and they immediately filled the room to capacity with exuberant fans, curious onlookers like me, and an unearthly powerful sound.  As soon as their set was finished, I made a beeline to the merch table and picked up a copy of their 6-song CD, The Collapse.

The songs on The Collapse read like a post-apocalyptic diary written by those left behind after the cataclysm, but who have still been deeply affected by something much bigger and scarier than themselves.  The tracks are punctuated by bits of radio static or odd recorded clips that seem to cry out “Is there anybody out there?

Moonbow: The End of Time

The opening strains of Moonbow's debut album, The End of Time, draw you in like the first hill of a monster roller coaster.  The off-tune violin and rustic guitar hint of something yet-to-come; and once the drums and bass kick-in, you're over that first big hill, screaming with a combination of thrill and terror. You're gravity's prisoner now, so you best just hold on tight and enjoy the ride.

Rock, Paper, Scissors... SHOP!

Adam Petersen, Alisha Budkie and Lindsay Nehls of Rock Paper Scissors

Rock Paper Scissors is an art supply and local-music record store coming to Over-The-Rhine in September.

Local artists Adam Petersen and Lindsay Nehls from The Marburg Collective have teamed up with Alisha Budkie of Smartfish Studio & Sustainable Supply to create a shop in the heart of the community (1301 Main Street) that will offer a selection of art supplies, designed to suit the needs of art students, local small businesses, and working and commercial artists.  They will also devote a large section of the store to locally-made materials and tools, including handmade charcoals, inks, books, and bags.
