John von Ohlen

This year's blues Christmas special is dedicated to the memory of WVXU Production Assistant Kevin Rowinski who started his radio broadcast career while a student at Xavier University.  Cincinnati Public Radio brought him on board in 2005 where he enjoyed his work on a number of award-winning specials over the years.  Sadly, he passed away in the spring of 2016, but his work is still highly valued by those who worked with him.  So, this blues special is one which he helped me produce in 2014.

Legendary drummer John Von Ohlen has recorded a cd of original piano compositions and needs help to pay for its production.  So, a Kickstarter project has been established to help him fund the project.   The goal is to raise $5,000 by Tuesday, December 12th.   So far, a little over $1,500 has been raised.

Legendary Cincinnati drummer John Von Ohlen has assembled a new big band with more of an emphasis on ensemble performances and assisting the community.

Local jazz drummer, bandleader and music legend John Von Ohlen is the subject a recently released authorized biography called It's Gotta Swing: The John Von Ohlen Story

Provided by Jim Nunn

Jim Nunn knew a little about drumming and a lot about book publishing. But he had never written a book until inspired by his friend, jazz drummer John Von Ohlen.

"For the last two years, John Von Ohlen has been putting up with me as we chatted countless times over coffee," says Nunn, who used to live across the street in Covington from Von Ohlen.

Nine local jazz greats will be inducted to the Cincinnati Jazz Hall of Fame in a free ceremony on April 30 at NKU's Greaves Hall.
