Houston Zoo seeks answers to fatal elephant disease

In a follow-up to our recent interview about the discovery of, and research into, elephant herpes, Lauren Howard, staff veterinarian at the Houston Zoo, joins Thane Maynard on this week’s Field Notes with more details of the devastating discovery that this disease killed on of the Zoo’s elephants and the critical research now taking place to assure it doesn’t happen again.

Baylor University College of Medicine works closely with the Houston Zoo

Dr. Paul Ling is associate professor in the Department of Molecular Virology & Microbiology at Baylor University and is working on two projects: one human related (the latency of the Epstein-Barr virus) and one animal related. As Thane Maynard learns from Dr. Ling in this episode of Field Notes, he is working with the Houston Zoo on the growing problem of elephant herpes virus and its sometimes fatal impact on the animal.

Celebrate as My-Thai the elephant turns 40

My-Thai enjoys her "cake"

My-Thai, the Cincinnati Zoo's 40-year-old Asian elephant, didn't waste any time knocking her "cake" over and breaking it up. It wasn't long before My-Thai started to devour the cake, brought in by a forklift, and made of frozen gelatin, Kool-aid and mountains of fresh produce and fruit.
