  Domestic violence not only takes a toll on its survivors, according to a 2013 report in Forbes, it is also responsible for an estimated $8.3 billion in medical and lost productivity costs each year in the United States. The YWCA Domestic Violence Employer Assistance Program was designed to support businesses who learn of an employee struggling with domestic violence.

  The elevator video of NFL player Ray Rice punching his then-fiancé and the outcry it generated has once again brought the all-too-common problem of domestic violence into the spotlight. One in four women in the United States will be victims of domestic violence in their lifetime. Physical and sexual attacks are often involved, but intimidation, emotional abuse and controlling behavior are all forms of domestic violence.

There were more than 41,000 domestic violence related arrests in Ohio last year. Though that number is down from 2011, advocates say they need more help from lawmakers to lower that stat even further. But they say a bill on teen dating violence passed a few years ago is helping.
