One in four children in the United States grows up without learning how to read. 


It's back to school time.  For some kids, it will be the first time away from home and in the classroom. It can be a difficult experience, according to librarian Amy Schardein.

The Northside neighborhood is home to WordPlay, a relatively new children’s literacy non-profit, giving neighborhood kids a place to go to ready, write and find new ways to express themselves. Libby Hunter, co-founder and executive director, is in-studio with Mark Perzel to discuss how WordPlay came into being and the organization’s mission and goals.
