UC football coach Butch Jones resigned today to take the coaching spot at the University of Tennessee.
Jones will not coach the Bearcats in their upcoming bowl game against Duke. UC has named assistant head coach Steve Stripling as interim head coach. Stripling, a 30-year coaching veteran who joined UC in 2010, will lead the team in the Belk Bowl December 27 if a new head coach isn't hired by then.
UC Athletics Director Whit Babcock said the search for a new coach will begin immediately. He did not specify a time frame for concluding the search.
UPDATE 12:45 pm: Associate Sports Communications Director for football Ryan Koslen confirms that Jones has withdrawn his name for the Colorado position.
UPDATE: Several media outlets are reporting Thursday that Jones has turned down the Colorado position. There's a link to Dennis Janson's story in the WCPO news section of this web page. More on this story as it develops.
UC's football team is looking forward to playing in the Belk Bowl on December 27, but whether Butch Jones will be leaving to coach another school is still up in the air. At a news conference Tuesday, reporters were told the focus would be on that upcoming game against Duke, and Jones stuck to that when the first questions came about whether he was staying or going.
