How Smart are Dogs?

On the eve of the Westminster Dog Show, everyone believes their dog is smart and you may think yours is the smartest ever. Either way, there is no denying the research that dogs do have an innate intelligence. One man has centered his professional life on researching the intelligence of dogs, and he joins Thane Maynard on the phone. Brian Hare is a professor of Evolutionary Anthropology at Duke University, where he founded the Duke Canine Cognition Center. He’s on the phone to discuss his latest book, The Genius of Dogs: How Dogs Are Smarter than You Think.

Cincinnati Community Tool Bank

A relatively new non-profit in Cincinnati has the mission to help other non-profits, as well as churches and civic groups, by providing necessary tools and equipment as low-cost rentals rather than expensive purchases. Kat Pepmeyer is the executive director of the Cincinnati Community Tool Bank, currently only one of four affiliates of Tool Bank USA in the country. She sits down with Mark Perzel to discuss how the organization began, its mission, and how organizations can access the services they provide.

Movie Review: Stand Up Guys

Sometimes it’s nice to go to a movie and spend a couple of hours with the old pros, especially when the film seems like it’s going to be one thing on the surface, and turns out rather different. The film is Stand Up Guys, and it came into town last week with little, if any, fanfare. It’s not playing everywhere, just a few select locations. Even film sites such as the Internet Movie Data Base and Google tag it as a “comedy.” Sure, there’s humor and a couple of laughs, but it’s definitely not The Sunshine Boys as Goodfellas.

Young Professionals' Choral Collective

Cincinnati has always been fertile ground for amazing choral music, starting with the May Festival, Vocal Arts Ensemble and, now, a unique chorus that offers young professionals in our area not only a chance to sing, but to be involved in our community and meet new people. KellyAnn Nelson, the founder and director of the Young Professionals’ Choral Collective (yp/CC) is in the studio with Mark Perzel to talk about how the group started, what its mission is, and their upcoming Black & Blues Gala on February 16.
