Schizophrenia and cognitive enhancement therapy

NOTE: This show originally ran on June 17, 2014.

Schizophrenia is a chronic, severe and disabling brain disorder which can cause agitation, hallucinations, and delusions. Because we still don't know what causes schizophrenia, antipsychotic medications and psychological treatments are used to eliminate the symptoms of the disease. Dr. Tracey Skale, chief medical officer for the Greater Cincinnati Behavioral Health Services; Dr. Stacy Martz, executive director of PLAN of Southwest Ohio; and Ray Gonzalez, executive director of the Center for Cognition and Recovery, join us to discuss schizophrenia and explore one treatment for the disorder, cognitive enhancement therapy.

Maryanne Zeleznik is responsible for all news and public affairs programming at WVXU. She also hosts Morning Edition Monday through Friday.
