Gov. John Kasich is done. He’s announcing he will suspend his campaign for the Republican nomination for President later this afternoon.Listen to the story here.
Just a few months ago, Kasich was full speed ahead.
“There’s so much going to happen. If you don’t have a seat belt, go get one.”
But the campaign stalled. After the Indiana primary, he was fourth in delegates in what became a two man race when Ted Cruz dropped out. University of Cincinnati Political Science Professor David Niven says Kasich’s message has not been what Republican voters want this year.
“He wanted to run this campaign on the strength of his resume and some really good heartfelt hugs. But resumes and hugs didn’t fit the mood of the electorate. They weren’t looking for established old hands with a sentimental streak.”
Kasich’s departure now leaves frontrunner Donald Trump as the last candidate standing. It is widely believed Trump will have the 1237 delegates he needs to win the nomination outright at the convention in Cleveland this summer.
