NPR story sparks Cincinnati Flash Mass on Sunday

All is quiet Friday in the sanctuary at Resurrection Catholic Church in Price Hill. But come Sunday morning at 11, staff at the parish school hope the pews will be filled to the max.

They're calling it a "Flash Mass."

The idea came from an NPR story about church goers in Detroit showing up to various masses... en masse.  Staff at Resurrection School heard the report and decided to give it a try in Cincinnati.

Like a flash mob, school counselor Becky Lilley says they hope hundreds will show up to celebrate mass and reinvigorate the church.

"We have no idea how many people will show up," says Lilley. "People are using the computer technology in a positive way, a Twitter acount, a Facebook page (to spread the word)... it's new to us! We're just going to be surprised to see who shows up."

With all the concerns about inappropriate online content, Lilley wants children to see sites like Facebook and Twitter used in a positive way.

Many of the students will be performing Sunday as well. They're singing Dona Nobis Pacem...

"...which means 'give us peace,'" says Lilley, "and we have such a need for peace in the world today."

Lilley says she hopes the idea will spread to other parishes.
