No Golden Globe Awards for Cincinnati

Despite having the most nominations (5), “Carol” was shut out at the 73rd annual Golden Globe Awards Sunday night.

And the animated film set in Cincinnati, “Anomalisa,” failed to win its only category. “Inside Out” was named best animated feature.

Leonard DiCaprio’s “The Revenant,” about an 1820s fur trading expedition, was the big winner with three awards – best drama movie, best drama actor (DiCaprio) and director.

Named best comedy movie was Matt Damon’s “The Martian,” which isn’t really a comedy. Damon played an astronaut presumed dead and left behind on Mars by his fellow crew members.

“Carol” had five nominations in four categories: best drama movie; lead actress (CateBlanchett and Rooney Mara); director (Todd Haynes); and original soundtrack.

The Golden Globes often are indication of the film industry’s top prize, the Academy Award. Oscar nominations will be announced Thursday.

“Carol,” about two women in love (Blanchett and Mara) in New York City in 1952, was filmed entirely here over eight weeks in March-April 2014.

On the red carpet before the show, Mara said she was "so proud of the film. I want it (a win) for Todd, and all the people who worked so hard on it."

“Carol” has received rave reviews and several impressive awards, including best picture at the Cannes Film Festival, Chicago International Film Festival and New York Film Critics Circle.

Mara was named best actress at Cannes last May. Haynes has picked up best director awards from Cannes, the New York Film Critics Circle Awards and the Boston Society of Film Critics Awards.

The 88th Academy Awards will air Sunday, Feb. 28, on ABC (7 p.m., Channel 9).
