The London Police Invade Northern KY

Greater Cincinnati has been synonymous with murals for generations.

In 1932, Winold Reiss created 23 towering mosaics for Union Terminal -- though 14 of them have since been moved to the airport for preservation.

One of Cincinnati’s most iconic pieces of art is the mural for the Terrace Plaza Hotel, created in 1947 by Joan Miro -- that now sits across from the Terrace Café in the Cincinnati Art Museum.

Cincinnati’s own ArtWorks has been decorating facades and exterior canvases since 1996.

In 2010 muralist Shepard Fairey plastered his imagery – quite literally – all around town.

And just last March, Irish artist Maser’s mural “Get Up” was installed on the side of a building on Pendleton St.

Now, the London Police are back in town.

The London Police is an art collaboration between Chaz Barrisson and Bob Gibson that started in 1998.  Since then, their work has adorned buildings and galleries in England, Amsterdam, Singapore, Italy, Norway, Slovakia as well as various cities in the US.  Their imagery often incorporates such pop icons as King Kong, Marilyn Monroe, characters from Star Wars and their own, unique beloved figure, known as the LAD.

Aside from the airport location, The London Police has artwork all around other parts of Northern KY.

The group was first asked to come to Covington in 2010 by BLDG– an artist’s refuge headquartered on Pike Street.  On their return trip I was able to catch up with Chris Ritter at BLDG and The London Police artists  Chaz Barrisson & Bob Gibson as they were working on a mural at CVG.

WVXU's Mark Heyne also spoke with the artists while they were hard at work at CVG.
