Hamilton County voter challenges, like the ones this man filed, are increasing

The Hamilton County Board of Elections will take a closer look this morning at challenges to nearly 100 voter registrations. The board is increasingly seeing more challenges at a time when it's already busy trying to prepare for the election.

Sycamore Township's Joseph Janus Jr. estimates he's filed more than 100 voter registration challenges since he began doing it. Why?

"I just have an interest in voter registration challenges and I don't do it specifically to one party, one neighborhood as sometimes I become aware of them. I may elect to follow-up and challenge them."

His latest challenge on Wednesday centered on voters whose addresses are still at what is now a burned down building. Janus says he believes everyone has a right to vote and wants to make sure they are doing it in the correct precinct.

Today the board is considering another 91 challenges from other people. Director Amy Searcy says the board is obligated by law to investigate within 10 days.

"It's allowed under Ohio law. Secretary Husted has given us a directive telling us how to proceed so that is what we do. (It's) one of the reasons we are working 12 hour days right about now."

The challenges under the microscope today originally numbered 400 but the others turned out to be fine.
