Miami University is continuing to mark the50th anniversary of Freedom Summer.

Nearly fifty Freedom Summer volunteers are in Oxford this weekend for an anniversary reunion and conference.

Besides remembering the past, the conference is focused on the continued significance of the civil rights work which began with volunteer training at Oxford's Western College for Women.

Miami University theater professor Ann Elizabeth Armstrong is one of the organizers. She says, "the reunion is a special space that we're creating on the Western campus so that the Civil Rights movement veterans can connect to each other, they can reflect on their experiences, and they can share stories."

Students, scholars and community members will participate in the conference. Events include  panel discussions, presentations, and museum exhibits.

The conference runs Saturday through Tuesday.

There's also a performance of the Freedom Summer Play at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center on Saturday.
