Cincinnati is a step closer to trashing its current policy of residents only being able to put out one container of garbage for pick-up. Some have widely criticized the requirement and the city has never really enforced it.
If Council approves the changes, residents will be able to use additional containers.
“This allows for residential customers to be able to purchase their own compatible cart, and then register those carts for collection,” said Jerry Wilkerson with the city’s Public Services department. “We are also proposing that cart exemptions be granted for some including those with disability and topography issues.”
In addition to allowing resident to use additional containers, the city will be collecting trash four days a week instead of the current five-day schedule.
Officials have divided the city into four zones for trash collections.
“The four partitions were created to try to keep entire neighborhoods within the same collection day,” said Mary Ferguson with Public Services. “This resulted in approximately 60 percent of our current collections remaining on the same collection day they they’re on right now.”
Council's Neighborhoods Committee will hold a public hearing on the changes next month. If Council approves the new trash rules they could go into effect on March 1st. And later next year the city would fine residents who are not following the new guidelines.
