UC testing water for fracking contamination

One of the still hotly contested debates over fracking is whether the practice of extracting trapped gas underground contaminates drinking water. Researchers at the University of Cincinnati are using an expensive machine to determine whether, at least in eastern Ohio, any contamination is naturally occurring or from fracking.

There's no shortage of negative publicity when it comes to fracking. Take the 2010 documentary "Gasland."

Commission weighing Mt. Airy hospital offer

Hamilton County Commissioners continue to weigh an offer to turn the former Mercy Mount Airy hospital into a new crime lab.

Catholic Health Partners is willing to give the facility to the county for free and the county coroner says the cost to renovate the old hospital would be a lot less than building a whole new crime lab. To make the deal cost effective, however, the county wants to move the Board of Elections out there as well.

Cincinnati pension reform votes could be coming soon

Cincinnati Council could be voting in the next several months on proposals to stabilize the city's underfunded pension system.  Some members said the action needs to happen soon, while others said the problem will not be remedied overnight. 

The Budget and Finance Committee heard about the issue Tuesday.

This definitely has been a colder, snowier winter than usual.   Just ask the folks at the National Weather Service in Wilmington how much snow we've gotten.

"So far this winter, not including Tuesday's snowfall but through midnight last night, 20.1 inches at our official observing location at the Cincinnati Airport,"  said Seth Binau, Science Operations Officer at the NWS.

Elections board split over move to Mount Airy

Democrats and Republicans on the Hamilton County Board of Elections are split over whether to move their headquarters from downtown to the former Mercy Mount Airy Hospital because of the issue of early in-person voting.

The Democrats on the board - Tim Burke and Caleb Faux - say moving to the Kipling road building would make it extremely hard for voters without cars to get to the board, which has one bus line. Many voters would have to take multiple buses to get to Mount Airy, they say.
