Hartmann, Portune take oath of office

Commissioners Portune and Hartmann take the oath of office from Board President Chris Monzel.

Greg Hartmann and Todd Portune were officially sworn in Wednesday to serve their new terms on Hamilton County Commission.

Hartmann repeated his mantra that these are challenging times for county government but says there are bright spots as well, like the county Land Bank.

David Mann pondering return to Cincinnati council

Democrat David Mann - a former Cincinnati mayor and congressman whose name hasn't been on the ballot since 1994 - is seriously considering a political comeback this year as a candidate for Cincinnati City Council.

"I've described myself as a recovering politician all these years; and maybe I am not,'' said Mann, with a laugh.

The 73-year-old lawyer told WVXU Wednesday that he still has "a passion for public service, which I think is a great privilege. And I think I have something to offer."

Mann said he will make a final decision "very soon."

County throws out MSD contract hiring policies

Hamilton County Commissioners are throwing out hiring and procurement policies related to the Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD).

The city, which operates MSD had instituted new bidding requirements the county, which owns MSD, says were unfair- and in some cases illegal. Chief among them were apprenticeship requirements and a policy giving preference to contractors within city limits.

Commission President Chris Monzel says a working group will be formed to draft a new procurement policy.

Pete Rose Way closing

Pete Rose Way will close Wednesday beginning at 6 p.m. for construction work taking down the pedestrian stairway.

WHEN:

Wednesday, Jan. 16 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Jan. 17; and again on Thursday, Jan. 17 from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. the following morning. One lane of traffic in each direction will be open on the affected section of Pete Rose Way on Thurs., Jan. 17 and Jan. 18 after 6 a.m.

Building a worldwide digital archive library

UC


UC is helping to spearhead an effort to digitize rare library collections worldwide.


Archivist and historian Kevin Grace is just back from Vancouver where he spoke to representatives from 26 countries. More and more people want to access special collections without having to go to remote places to look at them.


Grace says lots of U.S. universities are putting rare photos and books online but many other countries lack the resources to put the necessary background information to go with them.
