UC develops Olympic skeleton sled

This is a new and improved skeleton sled for the U.S. Olympic Team, a design led by UC professor Grant Schaffner, will be introduced at the 2014 Winter Olympics.

You won't get a very long look at it, considering the race only lasts about one minute, but a University of Cincinnati professor has designed a new and improved skeleton sled for the U.S. Olympic Team.

Grant Schaffner also improved the sled for the 2010 Olympics by making it stronger, flexible and designing it to smooth out the bumps and making it more steerable and controllable. For this Olympics he teamed with ProtoStar engineering, Fairfield-based Machintek Corporation, deBotech Inc of North Carolina and Carpenter Technology Corporation of Pennsylvania.

HPV vaccine doesn't lead to sex

Young women who receive the HPV vaccine are not more likely to have sex or participate in unsafe sexual behaviors. That's according to a report released Monday by Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

The study finds teen girls and young women's beliefs about the human papillomavirus vaccine  - whether accurate or inaccurate - aren't linked to subsequent sexual behaviors.

Ohio 32nd House District: A "black seat"?

If a legislative district has a majority of African-American residents, must it be represented by an African-American?  

That is a sticky question that has been roiling in the Hamilton County Democratic Party recently, as the Democrats try to hold on to the 32nd Ohio House District held by Dale Mallory who term-limited out and is running for the Ohio Senate.

Portune won't challenge for Governor

Hamilton County Commissioner Todd Portune has given up plans to challenge Ed FitzGerald in a Democratic  primary race for Ohio Governor.

Portune's decision came only five days before the Wednesday filing deadline for statewide candidates. After crisscrossing the state since early December trying to drum up support, in the end he could not muster enough support or overcome the opposition of the Ohio Democratic Party, which has endorsed FitzGerald, the Cuyahoga County executive.
