FitzGerald invades GOP stronghold to raise money

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Ed FitzGerald will come to Butler County's heavily-Republican Liberty Township tonight for a fundraising event.

FitzGerald, the Cuyahoga County Executive who has been endorsed for governor by the Ohio Democratic Party, will be at a reception and fundraiser at 5 p.m. at the home of Kathy Wyenandt, the chair of the Butler County Democratic Party executive committee.

The incumbent Republican governor, John Kasich, defeated then-Democratic governor Ted Strickland in 2010 by a large margin - 74,972 votes to Strickland's 40,153.

City announces neighborhoods for this year's enhancement program

Cincinnati officials have announced that East Price Hill and Walnut Hills have been selected for this year’s Neighborhood Enhancement Program.  

The two areas were selected based on a number of factors.  Those include: building code violations, vacant buildings, disorder and drug calls for police service and drug arrests, as well as graffiti, junk cars, litter and weeds.

Crime lab going to Mt. Airy, with or without board of elections

The Hamilton County coroner will get a long-awaited and expanded crime lab after the Hamilton County commissioners today accepted a gift of the former Mercy Mt. Airy Hospital.

Whether or not the Hamilton County Board of Elections goes along to the Kipling Road building remains to be seen.

The commissioners had until the end of the month to decide whether or not to accept Catholic Health Partner’s offer of the 500,000 square foot building and the surrounding land.

Aquarium shark ray gives birth

The Newport Aquarium is celebrating the arrival of six shark ray pups.

Here's the announcement:

In a historic biological achievement, Newport Aquarium announced Wednesday that Sweet Pea, the first documented shark ray to breed in a controlled environment, gave birth to seven pups on Friday, Jan. 24, 2014.

Gladys the Gorilla turns one

A one year old birthday party today for Gladys the Gorilla at the Cincinnati Zoo.  The baby Western-Lowland gorilla was brought to the Cincinnati zoo after her mother rejected her.  Keepers had dressed as a gorilla to help raise her.
