Minor budget tweaks expected ahead of vote

The budget Hamilton County Commissioners vote on later this week will likely look a lot like the one proposed by county administration.

Board President Chris Monzel is suggesting just one change. The proposed budget calls for cutting $6.65 million in indigent care levy funds from the UC Medical Center and using it to cover a gap in the Sheriff's inmate care budget.

This dog can sniff out polar bear pregnancy

How do you effectively determine if a polar bear is pregnant? By using a dog to sniff its poop of course! Scientists at the Cincinnati Zoo's Center for Conservation & Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) are working with this two-year old beagle, named "Elvis."

Obesity is main contributor to early onset puberty

A new study published by Pediatrics says obesity is the largest predictor of earlier onset puberty in girls. Researchers in Cincinnati (Children's Hospital), San Francisco and New York City studied 1,239 girls ranging in age from 6 to 8 at enrollment and followed at regular intervals from 2004 to 2011.

Goodbye (for now) to Mallory, politician and showman

Say what you want about Mark Mallory’s eight years as mayor of Cincinnati, which are rapidly coming to a close.

You can love him; you can loathe him.

What you can’t do is ignore him.

The man is a showman. Part stand-up comic. Your genial host. The man of a thousand quips.

And, if you find yourself on the wrong side of an issue he supports, a bulldog, who fights and claws and cajoles until he gets what he wants. A mini-LBJ. A chip off the ol’ block – his father, William Mallory Sr., a leader in the Ohio House for decades, was the same way.
