Kearney the latest to put Hamilton County on Ohio's political map

If old guard Republicans in Hamilton County were the type to use Internet slang, they might be typing “smh” when they see what is going on with their county and the Ohio Democratic Party these days.

“Scratching my head,’’ for those who don’t keep up with internet slang.

There was a time, a few decades ago, when the Ohio Democratic Party barely acknowledged the existence of Hamilton County; they turned their heads and pretended extreme southwest corner of the state didn’t exist because it was so thoroughly Republican.

Those days are gone.

This is the last weekend Hamilton County residents may drop-off  yard trimmings for free recycling by the Recycling and Solid Waste District.

2013 Balluminaria being cancelled because of high winds

The Cincinnati Park Board has decided to cancel Saturday’s Balluminaria at Eden Park because of the forecast for high winds.  

Officials said in a release balloons like calmer wind speeds, in the single digits, especially for inflating in smaller areas such as Mirror Lake.  Wind speeds Saturday are predicted to be 20 plus miles per hour.  

The park board said it doesn't want to risk the safety of the balloonists, staff or guests.  

The event will not be rescheduled.

Automatic recount warranted in council race, but it is up to Quinlivan

An automatic recount is warranted in the race for the ninth and final Cincinnati City Council seat between Republican Amy Murray and Democrat Laure Quinlivan, but it is up to Quinlivan whether the recount will go forward.

In the official count by the Hamilton County Board of Elections done this week, Murray led Quinlivan by 859 votes – within the one-half percent difference that triggers an automatic recount.

But Sally Krisel, the deputy director of the board of elections, said Quinlivan could ask the board not to do the recount.

School Board Settles With Former Superintendent

The Dayton Independent School district in Kentucky announced Thursday, former superintendent, Gary Rye, is responsible for paying back every penny he stole during his 15-year tenure.

Rye was initially accused of stealing about $224,000 in benefits from the district between 2007 and 2012, but investigations into his earlier years turned up much more.
