Library will build new (or renovate) libraries at 3 branches

The 10,000-square-foot house on the National Register of Historic Sites will replace the 2,500-square-foot storefront occupied by the Clifton Branch for more than 50 years.
Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County

The Cincinnati Hamilton County Public Library is planning groundbreakings later this month at three of its branches. Clifton, Reading and St. Bernard will all get new or renovated libraries in 2015.

The three branches will have expanded collections, computer labs, meeting and program rooms and individual study rooms.  All were designed for energy efficiency, and LEED certification is being pursued for both Reading and St. Bernard.

Ohio enters largest-ever road construction season

You know spring has really arrived when orange barrel season officially gets underway.  Ohio and local transportation officials got it rolling Thursday with a news conference at the corner of Fields-Ertel and Mason-Montgomery, a congested intersection next to I-71 that is slated for a loop ramp to make it easier and safer for drivers to navigate.    

The interchange project is one of many the Ohio Department of Transportation said will make this state construction season the largest ever and put a lot of Ohioans back to work.

Meet Kilua: Cincinnati Zoo introduces baby okapi

The public got its first glimpse of Kilua, a 4-month old okapi born at The Cincinnati Zoo on November 30, 2013.

On a beautiful and busy day at the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden, the public got its first glimpse of Kilua, a baby okapi born on November 30, 2013 to mother Kuvua and father Kiloro.  Kilua is the Cincinnati Zoo’s 15th okapi birth since 1989 but the first offspring from this couple.

GE adding 1,400 jobs in Greater Cincinnati

The parent company of Evendale-based GE Aviation is expanding operations in Greater Cincinnati. General Electric will open its new U.S. Global Operations Center here, breaking ground sometime this summer.

GE says the shared services center will create 1,400 jobs.  GE's Joe Allen says, "When we're fully staffed and ready to go a few years from now, we could as many as 2,000 employees."

Ohio Governor John Kasich says, "This is the biggest job announcement and single job growth in a decade."

The company plans to be fully operational here by 2017.

Hamilton Township in fiscal emergency

Ohio's auditor is placing Warren County's Hamilton Township under fiscal emergency.

The decision follows several years of alleged financial mismanagement by the township's former fiscal auditor. Auditor Dave Yost says township officials have 120 days to develop a financial plan.

Calling the township's books "a mess," Yost said the former fiscal officer, Jackie Terwilleger, was in over her head. She retired last month and is being investigated by the Warren County prosecutor.
