Military flyover hiatus won't affect Opening Day, say Reds

Military flyovers have become a standard part of major sporting events. But now the military is telling its elite air units to 'stand down' because of the sequester.

That means no special appearances at popular air shows and no military flyovers at baseball games, NASCAR races or soccer matches.

The Air Force, for example, says the Thunderbirds are canceling all performances effective April 1.

Four Cincinnati Democrats on statewide ballot?

On Friday night, at the Columbus Athenaeum, the Ohio Democratic Democratic Party will hold its annual "Legacy Dinner," one of the party's largest fundraising events of the year.

"Let's celebrate our 2014 talent,'' says the announcement on the party's website, ohiodems.org.

In other words, it is a "cattle call" for potential statewide candidates.

Catholic leaders react to choice of Pope Francis

Cincinnati Archbishop Dennis Schnurr says he was surprised by the selection of Pope Francis and will do research to learn more about him.

Cincinnati's Archbishop says he is rejoicing with the Hispanic population on the selection of Pope Francis. Dennis Schnurr sees it as recognition of the importance of Latin America. He says Latin America and Africa are the two fastest growing Catholic regions of the world. 

He says, "Right from the get go there was speculation that the cardinals would be looking to either Latin America or Africa and that speculation proved to be true."

Cincinnati's Heather Mitts retires from professional soccer

US National Team defender Heather Mitts played for several teams in several iterations of women's professional soccer leagues, including for the Atlanta Beat.

United States national soccer team member and Cincinnatian Heather Mitts is retiring. The 34-year-old, three-time Olympic gold medalist says it's time to move on to the next stage of her career.

Springer and Blackwell: Old allies, differing views

One could hardly find two political figures whose beliefs are more far apart than Ken Blackwell and Jerry Springer.


Blackwell, the conservative Republican and believer in limited government and the power of the private sector.


Springer, the liberal Democrat, who went on from a career in Cincinnati politics and TV news to become an internationally known talk show host, and a liberal Democrat who believes that government is not the enemy but the friend of those trying to their lives.


Both come from vastly different backgrounds.
