Foodbanks tell USDA help needed in summer months

USDA Administrator Audrey Rowe stopped in Cincinnati Monday. She participated in a roundtable discussion about ways to expand summer food programs for children.

Freestore Foodbank President Kurt Reiber says the goal is reducing childhood hunger during the summer months. That's when children who would normally benefit from free or reduced school lunch programs often go hungry.

Public hearing on Central Parkway bicycle lanes

Last November, City Council approved a plan to install protected bike lanes on Central Parkway that would eventually stretch from Elm Street downtown to Ludlow Avenue near Cincinnati State.  

The city was ready to award a contract for the first phase of the work.  But Mayor John Cranley and some new council members have questions about the project.  

Vice Mayor David Mann chairs Council's Neighborhoods Committee, which will hold a hearing on the issue Monday.

The star of Newport Aquarium's new Turtle Canyon exhibit, Bravo, a 650 pound tortoise, turns 85 Saturday. He was hatched April 19, 1929 on the Ecuadorian island of Santa Cruz. He arrived at the United States as part of the last group of tortoises exported from the Galapagos Islands.
