Effort underway to increase access to preschool education

Business and Community leaders are coming together to launch a city-wide initiative to get more - if not all- kids in pre-school.

Studies show children who attend pre-school do better in school and in life. Advocates point out nearly 90 percent of a child's brain is developed before age five but kids typically enter kindergarten at age six.

The Cincinnati Preschool Promise aims to be a public/private partnership.

Rumpke to save tons of glass from the landfill

Five to seven semis a day will transport recycled glass from this facility to Dayton for further refining.

Glass makes up 15 percent of what Cincinnatians throw out. Beginning this November, Rumpke will recycle it in a brand new St. Bernard facility that sits on the same site as one that burned down a year ago.


Although Rumpke will also recycle paper, plastics and metals at this facility, a big focus is on glass recycling. Very small, refined recycled glass particles are in big demand by glass container and fiberglass insulation companies.

Flying Pig Marathon addresses security concerns

Flying Pig Marathon organizers say they're taking extraordinary measures to reassess and strengthen security plans.

There will be a larger police presence and extra volunteers to watch out for anything suspicious.

Executive Director Iris Simpson-Bush says everyone is encouraged to bring less.

Participants will have to put items in clear bags if they want them transported from the start line to the finish. Spectators with bags are being warned they could be subject to search.

Cincy a stop on FitzGerald's campaign kick-off tour

Democrat Ed FitzGerald, the Cuyahoga County executive, is expected to formally announce his candidacy for Ohio governor Wednesday at stops in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati event takes place at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Laborers' Local Union Hall at 3457 Montgomery Rd. in Evanston. RSVPs for all three events can be made here.

Boston attack isn't slowing down runners

Runners say they won't let the April 15 attack in Boston deter them.

An oft-repeated theme after the Boston Marathon bombing was that runners are a hardy lot, who wouldn't let the attack intimidate them.  Add to that, they're also a tight knit, determined group.  

Banding together

Runnings stores and groups across the country are holding events today to show solidarity with the victims of the Boston attack.

Bob Roncker's Running Spot stores will be participating in the national Runners for Boston fun runs (or walks if that's more your pace).
