No referendum, but plenty of campaign fireworks

So, it appears there will be no referendum on the city of Cincinnati’s parking lease agreement on the ballot this fall.


Unless, that is, in the unlikely event that the Ohio Supreme Court decides to take up the appeal of the decision made by the Ohio First District Court of Appeals this week saying the agreement is not subject to referendum because it was passed in March as an emergency ordinance.


But nobody on either side of this really expects this to happen.

Washington Park celebration marks Army's 238 years

Staff Sgt. Billy Cook, a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, brought his family to the Army birthday and welcome home ceremony in Washington Park Friday. Tara Cook calls her husband’s 15 months in Iraq “a really long tour,” and worse for her than his more recent year in Afghanistan.  Cook’s wife and three children are happy he's serving stateside as a recruiter now.

Retired Major Sario Caravalho spoke of his three tours in Vietnam and the special men with whom he served during a salute to Vietnam era veterans.

Solar Impulse to make surprise stop in Cincinnati

Solar Impulse, the world's most advanced solar-powered airplane, is on its way to Cincinnati, a surprise stop because of weather issues in Washington D.C. The carbon fiber plane has a wingspan of 208 ft. (like a Boeing 747),  and weighs about as much as a small car (3,527 lbs.) It can fly day and night without fuel or polluting emissions. It is 80 ft. nose to tail.

Smitherman to give up NAACP presidency for now

Cincinnati council member Christopher Smitherman will step down as president of the Cincinnati chapter of the NAACP while he is running for re-election to council.

A number of members of the local chapter have urged Smitherman to leave the NAACP presidency while running for office. In a statement released Friday, Smitherman said he was doing so under a policy adopted by the NAACP's national board of directors in 1968.
