Giffords brings gun control campaign to Northside

Former congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was critically wounded in a shooting at a event in Tucson in Jan. 2011, and her husband, former astronaut Mark Kelly will be in the Northside Independence Day parade Thursday as part of a seven-state "Rights and Responsibilities" tour.

Caleb Faux, executive director of the Hamilton County Democratic Party, said he has been told by officials of Americans for Responsible Solutions, the Super PAC run by Giffords and Kelly, that they will hold a press event in Cincinnati and ride in the Northside parade.

It's official: Cincinnati will have mayoral primary

It's been assumed for months, but it became official Thursday - Cincinnati will have a primary election for mayor on September 10.

Thursday was the filing deadline for mayoral candidates; and election officials said three have already qualified by submitting petitions with the signatures of 500 registered voters. They are Democrats Roxanne Qualls and John Cranley, along with Libertarian Jim Berns.

New bike map for southwest Ohio

The Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana Regional Council of Governments is releasing its 2013 Ohio counties bike route guide.

A press release says the map is a combination of routes throughout Butler, Clermont, Hamilton and Warren counties.  A similar version was released last year, but it’s been updated to include additional neighborhood streets, memory hills and problem areas in specification intersections.

Work starts on Gateway's new urban campus

Construction is officially underway on the Gateway Community and Technical College Urban/Metro Campus in downtown Covington.  College officials and community leaders made a symbolic swing of the sledge hammer Thursday to mark the start of a complete renovation of the former Marx Gallery at 520 Madison Avenue into the Gateway Technology and Design Center.  Classes are expected to start in the refurbished 50,000-square-foot facility in August next year.

Elmwood Place speed cameras confiscated

Elmwood Place's speed cameras will soon be in possession of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department. Judge Robert Ruehlman ordered the cameras confiscated after ruling the village, and the company running them, Optotraffic, did not turn them off after he ordered them to and continued to issue tickets.
