Reds honor Joe Morgan this weekend

All the Reds players who made up the Great Eight will be taking part in the dedication ceremonies for the new Joe Morgan statue at Great American Ball Park this weekend. 

Reds Hall of Fame executive director Rick Walls says Morgan was one of the last players to join the famed starting eight on the Big Red Machine of the 1970's.

"Joe was one of the final pieces that came in '72 in the trade with Cesar Geronimo," said Walls.  "So the last two starting members came in, that kind of solidified that group, and when that group of eight played together it was so special."

City narrows police chief search to four

A screening committee  has narrowed the list of Cincinnati police chief candidates to four finalists from the original pool of 28. 

The finalists are (in alphabetical order):

  • Jeffrey Blackwell, Deputy Chief –  Columbus, Ohio  Police Department
  • Michael Dvorak, Deputy Chief – Mesa, Arizona  Police Department
  • Paul Humphries, Interim Police Chief – Cincinnati Police Department
  • Jerry Speziale, Deputy Superintendent – NY/NJ Port Authority Police

City Manager Milton Dohoney will interview the four candidates in the next coming days.

Cincinnati Council could vote to reduce cell phone thefts

Cincinnati Council could vote on an ordinance next week that's designed to reduce cell phone theft.  

Right now someone could take your mobile device and get cash for it in just about 10 minutes at so called pop-up cell phone stores.  

Council Member Chris Seelbach said the new law will require these businesses to be licensed just like pawn shops.

McConnell lectures on Bunning at NKU

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell will deliver a lecture on the life and career of his former Senate colleague, Jim Bunning, on Friday at Northern Kentucky University. .

The lecture will take place at 4 p.m. Friday in the University Center Otto Budig Theater on the NKU campus.

Bunning, a former congressman and major league pitcher, will be there. It will be the fourth lecture in a series by McConnell on "Prominent Kentuckians in the U.S. Senate."

Bunning retired from the Senate in 2010; and was replaced by Sen. Rand Paul.

Ohio Supreme Court won't hear parking lease case, restraining order denied also

The Ohio Supreme Court has declined jurisdiction in the Cincinnati parking lease case.  City Solicitor John Curp confirmed that in an e-mail Wednesday morning.

The case involved whether city voters had a right to place the issue on the ballot.  A Hamilton County Common Pleas judge said it could go on the ballot, but an Ohio appeals courts overturned that decision.  The appeals court said the city could pass the parking lease as emergency ordinance and avoid referendum.

The Supreme Court decision should end the case.
