Local agency starts monitoring air near expressways

This converted shipping container now serves as a near-road air monitor.

If you're driving southbound 75 and happen to notice a shelter with a large antenna-like device sticking out the top near the 74 interchange, don't worry.  It's not spying on you or engaging in personal data mining.  It's among the first in a new national air monitoring program that starts this month.

The Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency started the new program to monitor for air pollution in near-road environments.  And you can't get much nearer than this site, which sits about 15 to 20 feet from the interstate.

How big a headache could Portune be to FitzGerald?

A few weeks ago, the 2014 Ohio gubernatorial race looked like a fairly simple affair.

John Kasich, the incumbent Republican, was set to face off in the fall with a Democrat, Cuyahoga County Executive Ed FitzGerald.

The conventional wisdom was that Kasich was the favorite for re-election, although there was polling out there that suggested that FitzGerald – still a relative unknown outside of northeast Ohio – was within striking distance.

Report recommends flat renewal of DD services levy

A consultant's report on the Hamilton County Developmental Disabilities Services levy is recommending the tax rate remain unchanged when it comes up for a vote in May. The agency has requested its levy rate remain flat.

The report will be officially presented Monday to the Tax Levy Review Committee.

Christmas tree recycling this weekend

If your once glorious Christmas tree is starting to look a little worse for wear, Hamilton County is ready to help you recycle. Three recycling sites open Saturday. They'll accept trees and other holiday greenery.

Details from Hamilton County Recycling and Solid Waste District:

Saturday, January 4 and January 11, 2014 from noon–3:00 pm, sites will be open to receive holiday greenery.

Covington library completes massive renovation

The Covington Branch of the Kenton County Library has recently undergone a massive remodeling, inside and out, of the 39-year old facility on the corner of 5th and Scott. Executive Director Dave Schroeder joins Anne Arenstein to talk about the renovations, what’s new inside the building and some of the expanded resources available there for the community.
