Democrats use tea party to battle Issue 4

It’s not every day that you come across an issue that unites the Cincinnati AFL-CIO Labor Council and the Cincinnati USA Regional Chamber.

Nor are there many issues on which the two Democratic candidates for Cincinnati mayor, John Cranley and Roxanne Qualls, agree.

But Issue 4, the tea party-backed charter amendment that will be on the Nov. 5 ballot, is one of them.

Qualls, Cranley at Christ Church forum Thursday

John Cranley and Roxanne Qualls, the two candidates for Cincinnati mayor, will meet in a community forum at noon next Thursday at Christ Church Cathedral downtown.

Organizers of the Community Issues Forum, a long-standing noontime tradition at Christ Church Cathedral, are not calling the joint appearance of the two Democrats a debate.

At the forum, each candidate will be given an allotted period of time to lay out his or her vision for the city and plans if he or she is elected mayor on Nov. 5. Then, the candidates will take questions from the audience.

Oktoberfest road closures

As you're donning your lederhosen and getting ready to head  to Oktoberfest Zinzinnati keep in mind there will be some road closures and parking changes.

These streets are now closed until 5 a.m. Monday:

  • Fifth Street between Vine and Sentinel
  • Walnut between Fourth and Sixth
  • Main Street between Fourth and Sixth
  • Sycamore between Fourth and Sixth
  • Broadway between Fourth and Sixth

Broadway will be temporarily converted from one-way to two-way between Seventh and Sixth Streets.

Brennaman signs extension with Reds

The Cincinnati Reds have signed Hall of Fame broadcaster Marty Brennaman to a three-year contract extension through the 2016 season to serve as the play-by-play voice of the Reds on Radio Network.  The 71-year-old Brennaman has been the lead voice of the Reds radio team since 1974.  He shared the booth for 31 years with Reds Hall of Fame pitcher Joe Nuxhall.

Internet cafe referendum

Will internet cafe issue make the ballot?

The gamble that internet cafe backers have taken to try to stop a law effectively banning those establishments may not pay off. The supporters of those cafes, also called sweepstakes parlors, launched a petition drive to stop the law and put it before voters. But early estimates show that they may not have the 231,000 signatures they need to get the law onto next year’s ballot. Secretary of State Jon Husted said his office will know next week.
