Negro League star Thomas Turner passes away

Funeral services are this weekend for Thomas "High Pocket" Turner of Georgetown, Ohio, a star of Negro League baseball in the 1940's. Turner died Monday at the age of 97.

He played baseball for the Cincinnati Stars in 1936. He played for his Army team and after that played professionally in Mexico. In 1947, he played for the Chicago American Giants of the Negro League.

Negro League Baseball was organized in February 1920 in Kansas City and included teams mostly in the Midwest like the Dayton Marcos and Cincinnati Cuban Stars. One could find black and white baseball teams playing each other in small towns across the country, but the major leagues were segregated until 1945. Up until then, Kenesaw Mountain Landis was the commissioner of baseball, and he opposed integration.

Dinosaurs with a southern flair make their debut at Museum Center

With names like Giganotosaurus, Eoraptor and Pisanosaurus, these are definitely not your parents' dinosaurs. In fact, the new exhibit that opens Thursday, Ultimate Dinosaurs: Giants from Gondwana, features dinosaurs most of us have never heard of before.

The exhibit is making its U.S. premiere at the Cincinnati Museum Center starting Thursday, and it's billed as a collection of the biggest, strangest and newest dinosaurs discovered in South America, Africa and Madagascar about 20 years ago.

As he tells Mark Heyne, he spent the entire 2012 baseball season, from spring training through the World Series, photographing the game and the players with Instagram on his iPhone4s, not his usual Canon cameras.

After 24 years and tons of trash, River Sweep still going strong

Nearly a quarter century after it began, the massive cleanup effort along the banks of the Ohio River and its tributaries still draws tens of thousands of volunteers. They'll be combing more than 3,000 miles of shoreline, picking up trash and debris for River Sweep on June 15.

Jeanne Ison with the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission, the sponsoring organization for River Sweep, said the event has been very effective since its inception.
